Window replacement in Melbourne involves removing existing glass and frames and installing custom-built double glazed frames and glass in their place. Windows Republic manufactures every replacement in our Cheltenham factory and installs Melbourne-wide with in-house crews. Whether you're replacing windows in a Victorian-era home or changing window frames in a 1990s build, typical lead time is 4–6 weeks; full-home installation takes 4–5 days. All work is backed by a 10-year warranty.

If you've been putting up with rattling sashes, fogged glass, draughts that ignore the curtains, or aluminium frames that conduct cold straight into your living room, it's probably time. Replacing windows in a Melbourne home is one of the highest-impact single upgrades you can make: it changes daily comfort, ongoing energy bills, exterior noise, and the way the front of your house presents. We replace windows across every Melbourne suburb, from Victorian terraces to mid-century brick homes to contemporary apartments, with high-thermal-efficiency European uPVC frames, Australian-made double glazed units, and finishes that match (or quietly outperform) your existing aesthetic.

Window Replacement vs Window Repair: Which Do You Need?

If your windows are under ten years old and the issue is cosmetic or mechanical, repair is usually the right call. If they're older, fogged, or draughty, replacement is the call, and the savings (energy, noise, sanity) start the day they're installed.

Replace ifBetter Long-term

  • Glass is fogged, milky, or has condensation between panes (failed seal, unrepairable).
  • Frames are rotting, warping, corroded, or visibly aged beyond restoration.
  • Original aluminium and timber frames are thermally conductive (or rotting), draughty, and noisy regardless of glass spec. Many Melbourne homeowners are now changing window frames from aluminium to uPVC for this reason.
  • Original 3mm single-pane glass is non-compliant by today's safety standards and a hazard if it breaks.
  • Significant draughts even when the window is fully shut and locked.
  • You can hear traffic, trains, or neighbours from inside with the windows closed.
  • Heating bills have crept up faster than the rest of the household budget.
  • You're upgrading the home and want NCC 2025 / 7-star NatHERS compliance.

Repair ifSimple Fix

  • A single locking mechanism, hinge, or handle has failed.
  • One pane has cracked but the rest of the frame is in good condition.
  • Sash cords or runners need adjustment or replacement.
  • Weather seals have perished but the frame is sound.
  • The window is under 10 years old and otherwise performing.

How Window Replacement Works in Melbourne: The 6-Step Process

Every replacement project follows the same disciplined sequence. We measure twice. We cut once. We're not making coffee tables.

1
Step 01 · The Visit

Free Site Measure

We visit your home, measure and photograph each opening, and talk through style, glass spec, and frame colour. No-obligation written quote within 48 hours.

2
Step 02 · The Build

Manufacture in Cheltenham

Your windows are built to the exact dimensions of your openings in our Bayside workshop using Deceuninck Legend Art uPVC profiles, factory-welded at 245°C, with double glazed argon-filled units and German Siegenia / Roto hardware. We buy 100% GreenPower accredited renewable electricity to match our electricity use.

3
Step 03 · The Removal

Remove Existing Windows

On install day, our crew carefully removes your existing frames and glass. Old materials are taken offsite for recycling. We tape, drop-sheet, and protect your interior, and your new windows are always glazed the same day, so you're never left with an open hole overnight.

4
Step 04 · The Install

Install & Glaze On-Site

The new frames are levelled, packed, and fixed into the prepared opening. Glass is site-glazed into each frame for the cleanest possible finish. Every install uses toughened safety glass across all windows and doors as standard, with no exceptions and no compromise on safety.

5
Step 05 · The Finish

Seal & Reveal

Double-sealed with water-resistant expandable insulation foam. Primed pine reveals and architraves installed; we don't use MDF. External cover strips fitted, then caulked with silicone, nail holes gapped. All openable sashes installed, tested, and adjusted.

6
Step 06 · The Handover

Clean Up & Handover

We sweep up, take everything away, and walk you through how each window operates. Nothing left in the driveway; the cleaning point in our reviews is hard-earned.

Aluminium & Timber to uPVC Window Replacement: Why Melbourne Homes Are Changing Window Frames

The single most common project we run: removing original aluminium frames (typical of homes built between 1960 and 2000) or tired timber frames (older period homes) and replacing them with custom uPVC double glazed windows that fit the existing opening. No structural changes. No oversized opening cuts. Same look, dramatically different performance.

Replacing aluminium or timber frames usually requires no permit and no structural change: we measure your existing opening and build to fit. Most aluminium- or timber-to-uPVC swaps complete in 4–5 days for a full home.

Window Frame Replacement vs Glass-Only Retrofit

"Window frame replacement" can mean two different things, and they are not the same project. Full replacement removes the frame and the glass and installs a new sealed uPVC unit. Glass-only retrofit replaces just the glass while leaving the original frame in place. Here's the honest comparison.

Why full replacement wins long-term

Modern uPVC double glazed windows are sealed units, factory-welded at 245°C. The frame corners are heat-fused into a single rigid weld, and the insulated glass unit (IGU) is bonded into a multi-chambered extrusion engineered specifically to hold the glass at the right depth, with the right gasket geometry, drainage paths, and hardware mounting points.

Retrofit suppliers usually replace only the glass, leaving the original frame in place. It's cheaper upfront, but the results vary considerably and the thermal performance can never match a full replacement (the old frame is still leaking heat, even with new glass).

A complete frame-and-glass replacement costs roughly 30% more than a glass-only retrofit, but delivers far better thermal, acoustic, and longevity results that hold up for decades. Most homeowners who retrofit eventually move to full replacement anyway, which makes retrofit the more expensive option in the long run, just delayed.

Vlad replaced all our windows with double glazing about 4 years ago. GREAT job. We recently had a stone from a lawn mower crack one of them. His product support is excellent, glazed panel replaced economically and promptly with minimum fuss. Vlad is great to deal with.

Our apartment block recently had all timber window and door frames replaced by Vladimir and team and I highly recommend them! I obtained over 8 quotes for our block but found the product (uPVC) and service that Vladimir offered to be the best. Insulation has improved significantly and they were very efficient on day/s of install. Look no further!

I had a triple-glazed window supplied and installed by Windows Republic, and I couldn't be happier with the result. Their pricing was the best I found, and the quality of the window is outstanding. The installation was done perfectly: clean, professional, and with great attention to detail. Vladimir was fantastic to deal with from start to finish.

Window Replacement Melbourne: Common Questions

How long does window replacement take in Melbourne?
A single window is typically replaced in 2–3 hours. A full-home replacement of 10–15 windows generally takes 4 to 5 days on site. Lead time from confirmed order to installation is 4 to 6 weeks, which covers manufacturing time in our Cheltenham factory plus the site schedule. We'll give you a clear production and installation date at the time of quote.
Do I need a council permit to replace windows in Melbourne?
In most cases, like-for-like window replacement in Victoria does not require a building permit; it falls under exempt development. However, if your property sits in a heritage overlay, if you're changing the size of an opening, or if the work involves structural alterations, a planning or building permit may be required. We recommend checking with your local council. We're happy to advise based on your specific suburb and property; we've yet to meet a council member who likes surprises.
Can you replace aluminium windows with uPVC double glazed windows?
Yes, this is one of the most common projects we run in Melbourne. We remove the existing aluminium frame and glass entirely, prepare the opening, and install a custom-manufactured uPVC double glazed window built to your existing opening. No structural changes required in the vast majority of cases. The thermal improvement is dramatic: aluminium whole-window U-value of 5.0–6.0 W/m²K drops to as low as 1.1 W/m²K with our uPVC double glazed range.
What's included in the window replacement service?
Our quoted price includes: removal and disposal of existing windows, supply and installation of new uPVC double glazed units custom-built to your openings, internal and external sealing to AS4773 standard, fitting of all hardware (handles, locks, stays, hinges), reinstatement or replacement of architraves and reveals where needed, and full site clean-up. The written quote specifies exactly what's included, with no unexpected extras.
Do you replace windows in heritage or period homes?
Heritage projects are possible but complex. Our uPVC profiles come in woodgrain foil finishes (golden oak, hazelnut) and colonial-bar configurations that can match traditional sash styles. However, heritage overlay approvals can be unpredictable and depend entirely on your local heritage authority. We recommend confirming heritage overlay requirements with your council's heritage advisor before requesting a quote; we'll then quote based on what they approve.
How do I know if I should replace or just repair my windows?
Repair is usually right when the window is under 10 years old and the issue is mechanical (handle, hinge, sash cord, single broken pane). Replace when: glass is fogged or has condensation between panes (failed double-glazed seal); frames are rotted, warped, or corroded; original aluminium is causing draughts and noise; the window won't close, lock, or seal properly. If you're standing in front of a window in winter wearing a beanie, that's a sign.
What's the difference between window replacement and window frame replacement?
In modern Melbourne residential work, the two are functionally the same. Modern uPVC double glazed units are sealed factory-assembled systems where the frame and glazing are engineered to work together. Replacing only the frame and trying to retrofit modern double glazing into an old aluminium or timber frame is usually more expensive, less thermally effective, and structurally compromised. The exception is heritage timber sashes where sash-by-sash restoration may be appropriate.
Which Melbourne suburbs do you service for window replacement?
We replace windows across all Melbourne metropolitan suburbs and the Mornington Peninsula, from inner suburbs like South Yarra, Carlton, and Richmond, through bayside suburbs like Brighton, Sandringham, and Mentone, the inner east of Hawthorn, Camberwell, Kew, the south-east through Glen Waverley and Wheelers Hill, and out to Werribee, Frankston, and Mount Eliza. Cheltenham factory means short lead times. Get in touch to confirm coverage for your suburb.
